While not everyone you see when you go out today will be wearing sunglasses, the fact remains that they ought to be wearing some form of eye protection whenever they are outside for any length of time, and this includes driving in a car, and sitting under umbrellas. Indirect sun exposure can be harmful to your eyes, albeit not as intensely as direct exposure is. Wearing sunglasses helps your eyes by enhancing your eyes’ ability to filter light while they also protect your eyes from the damage caused by the sun’s UV rays. It is a known fact that by protecting the eyes with proper sunglasses, you can thereby reduce and even eliminate your potential for developing such conditions as cataracts and other forms of retinal dysfunction.
What You Need
In looking for sunglasses, you want to focus your search on good ones that offer glare reduction in addition to UV protection by filtering out anywhere from 99 to 100 percent of those rays. They should also be comfortable and they should not distort colors in any way. Many people do not realize that young children are at just as much risk from sun damage to their eyes as adults. Additionally, there are many medications that can make your eyes more susceptible to sensitivity to the sun’s rays. If you are not sure, ask your pharmacist about the meds you are prescribed. Some of the more commonly know medications to influence sun intensity to eyes are birth control pills, sulfa drugs, tetracycline, diuretics and some tranquilizers. Good sunglasses are all you need to be safe, when in doubt.
